Which internal doors are best for you is down to personal preference. Below are a few factors to help you decide which door is for you: • Style - Contemporary, Classic, Shaker, Cottage • Finish - Wood veneer, Laminate, Painted, White Primed • Fitting - Standard Swing, Pocket Door System, Bi-fold door, Barn Style, Straight Sliding • Size - Standard Size, Bespoke, or Made-to-Measure • Glazing - Do you want to allow more light into the room? • Door Construction - Hollow core or solid, engineered core? • Fire door - Do you require a fire door according to regulations or want extra safety? • Cost - Make sure to factor in door furniture to your cost
Todd Doors offers two types of hinges; Butt Hinges and Parliament Hinges. Our standard Butt Hinges are perfect for most domestic and commercial projects. Parliament Hinges are designed for doors that need to fold back on themselves, creating the maximum possible opening through a doorway. Traditionally used to allow a door to fully open 180 degrees, back onto a wall. As standard we recommend 2x 3 inch hinges for a 35mm standard door, and 3x 4 inch hinges for a fire door.
Engineered doors are made up of multiple layers of timber that are pressed and glued together in different directions to form the core material, with a veneer applied to the surface and lipping fixed to the edges. This technique allows us to achieve the same beautiful finish as a solid wood door, but is more environmentally friendly, making the best use of our natural resources. Additionally, the engineered doors are more stable, less prone to shrinking, wrapping and twisting over time.
The simplest way to measure the door that you need is to measure the old one if it's still hanging, but remember to check that it fits properly and doesn't rub on the frame or have huge gaps around the sides or tops. If you do not have an existing door to measure, you can measure the "hole in the wall". The opening that you have in the wall will either already have a frame fitted or will just be a bare opening. When you measure a bare opening, the size you have is known as the "Brick to Brick opening" or "Brick opening". Once you have your frame or brick-to-brick opening measurements, the simplest way forward would be to contact one of our Door Experts and let them confirm the door size that is best for you. For more information, visit our Size Guide and Measuring Your Door.
When purchasing doors, it's important to know the trimming allowance, should you need to make the door smaller. If fitting a Non Fire Rated (Typically 35mm or 40mm thick) Engineered Interior Door into an existing frame and the door leaf requires trimming, the maximum that the door can be trimmed from the top and 2 long edges is typically 6mm. Trimming over 6mm may be possible, but the lipping will be substantially weakened, and any work of this nature would be at the installer's or end user's risk. The maximum that the door can be trimmed from the bottom edges is typically 20mm or more, but to find the maximum allowance for your chosen door, please visit the product page on our website. Trimmed edges must be finished/re-finished and brought up to the same standard of finish as the rest of the door. Failure to do this will invalidate your guarantee.
The appropriate door thickness depends on where the door will be installed: Internal Doors (Non-Fire Rated): For standard internal use where a fire-rated door is not required, our 35mm doors are ideal. Internal Doors (Fire-Rated): If the door leads to an integral garage, a loft conversion, or is located in a block of flats above two levels, a fire-rated door is typically required. We offer two options: 44mm Fire Door: Rated to withstand fire for up to 30 minutes. 54mm Fire Door: Our thickest option, rated to withstand fire for up to 60 minutes. If you’re unsure which thickness is suitable for your project, speak to one of our Door Experts. They’ll help you determine the best option based on your specific needs.
We would not recommend you use your internal doors outside for multiple reasons. Todd Doors offers a large range of external doors to create a stunning entrance to your home with our range of high quality and beautifully designed external doors. From contemporary designs to traditional period doors, we have a variety of options to choose from. Our timber external doors are extremely thermally efficient and can be purchased as a fully assembled doorset, complete with all the furniture and locks included, or on their own for you to fit into an existing frame.
We recommend either a fully painted finish or high-performance wood finishing treatment should be used. We recommend using Osmo oil products to finish doors.
Made to measure doors allow you to choose your own sizes, tailored precisely to your millimeter specific opening. They're ideal when standard sizes don't quite fit. Bespoke doors are premium designs that offer great customisation in style, finish and detailing. Bespoke doors typically carry a 14 week lead time.
Pocket doors can be installed into an existing pre-built wall; however, it would be a lot more complicated to install correctly. We would advise that a highly skilled carpenter take on this installation only. Do take into consideration the following: Wall Modification: You will need to remove drywall and cut into the studs to create a space for the door to slide into. Structural Considerations: Ensure the wall is not load-bearing. If it is, you will need to support the wall via a header. Utilities: Check for any electrical wiring or plumbing that will need rerouting. The most efficient way to install a pocket door system would be before the wall has been erected, to ensure an accurate installation.
You can buy frames without a door at Todd Doors. We provide a variety of internal lining kits and external door frames to meet all of our door needs. We have a selection of Skirting and Architrave to give the last touches to your project. From Walnut door frames to Oak Skirting to White Architrave, we have all that you need for your project. You cannot use a skirting board as architrave. Skirting boards and architrave are two different products, with skirting boards generally a lot larger than architrave.
Unfortunately, we do not fit doors. Our showroom Door Experts do know of local carpenters near the showroom area, who will be more than happy to assist. If you’ve placed your order online, we recommend looking at Checkatrade for local carpenters near you.
Fire doors can be crucial in saving lives, but only when they are fitted correctly. We strongly advise using an experienced joiner who knows how to fit a fire door. Incorrectly installed fire doors may only provide 5-10 minutes of fire resistance. It is essential to follow all the fitting instructions as well as keep them always closed. It is also important to routinely test your fire door to ensure it is still complying with standards.
Intumescent strips are a great addition to any fire door to improve the safety and effectiveness of the door. In the event of a fire the intumescent strip seal will expand to many times its original volume and seal the gap around the door to provide an effective barrier against the passage of fire, smoke and hot gases. Todd Doors offers options that include fire only or fire and smoke intumescent.
Todd Doors would be happy to provide a fire certification for your door to provide authentication to building regulations. Simply email your order number to [email protected] with your sales order number, and the team will provide your certificate.
At Todd Doors, all door handles, regardless of brand, style, or colour, are sold as pairs. Whether you're choosing modern handles, classic white designs, or unique finishes, rest assured that each set includes both handles for your door.
