Choosing the tight door for your home is an important decision, and we're here to help you make it with confidence. This page covers common questions about our products, including materials, finishes, sizes, fore door specifications, glazing options, and care advice. Whether you're looking for technical details or general guidance, you'll find the answers you need right here.
For anything that may not be covered below, our Door Experts are always happy to assist.
Which internal doors are best for you comes down to personal preference, style, and practicality. When choosing the right door for your home, it’s important to consider a few key factors such as the overall design of your property, the amount of natural light you want in each room, and how much privacy or sound reduction is needed. Material and finish also play a big part, with options ranging from classic oak and walnut to modern white primed doors that suit contemporary interiors. You should also think about durability, maintenance, and whether glazed, panelled, or solid doors will best complement your space. By taking these factors into account, you can find internal doors that not only look great but also suit your lifestyle and everyday needs.
Todd Doors offers a huge range of doors, so we understand that choosing the right hinges may seem a little overwhelming. To make things simple, we’ve outlined our recommended hinge configurations below. These recommendations are based on using Todd Doors hinges, which are specifically selected for their quality, durability, and compatibility with our doors.

For External Doors:
We fully guarantee these hinge configurations when used with our doors. If you would prefer to add additional hinges for extra support or personal preference, you are more than welcome to do so.
An engineered door is a high-quality door designed to provide both durability and a premium finish. It is crafted using carefully constructed timber components, typically with a real wood veneer applied to achieve the appearance of a solid timber door.
This construction method offers excellent stability and strength, making engineered doors less prone to movement over time compared to traditional solid wood doors. As a result, they maintain their look and performance in changing indoor conditions, making them a reliable and long-lasting choice for modern interiors.
Unfinished
Typically a real-wood veneer that is left in a 'bare' state, ready for the end users to apply either an oil, varnish, paint or stain finish.
Pre-finished
Generally, fully finished in either a spray lacquered or painted state, leaving the end user very little to do post-installation.
Primed
Supplied coated with a basic one or two coats of primer, but in need of further preparation (sanding, caulking and filling) and undercoating before any final or top coats are applied by the end user.
The simplest way to measure the door that you need is to measure the old one if it's still hanging, but remember to check that it fits properly and doesn't rub on the frame or have huge gaps around the sides or tops.
If you do not have an existing door to measure, you can measure the "hole in the wall". The opening that you have in the wall will either already have a frame fitted or will just be a bare opening. When you measure a bare opening, the size you have is known as the "Brick to Brick opening" or "Brick opening". Once you have your frame or brick-to-brick opening measurements, the simplest way forward would be to contact one of our Door Experts and let them confirm the door size that is best for you. For more information, visit our Size Guide and Measuring Your Door.
Alternatively, speaking to your carpenter or door fitter to help with ensuring you will be ordering the correct sized doors for you project.
Yes, all of our doors can be trimmed, although each product has specific trimming allowances which can be found in the specification tab on the product page. If a door needs to be reduced beyond its stated trimming limits, a made-to-measure option will usually be required.
Whenever a door is trimmed, the exposed edges must be properly re-sealed to maintain performance and durability. In cases where the height is reduced, the internal structure of the door may also become visible, so correct finishing is essential.
Made-to-Measure
Made-to-measure doors are ideal when most openings in your home suit our standard off-the-shelf door sizes, but you have one or two awkward openings that require a custom fit. Our made-to-measure service allows you to choose bespoke dimensions, tailored precisely to your millimetre-specific opening, ensuring a perfect fit where standard sizes simply won’t work.
Our Made-to-Measure range of doors typically carry a 5-month lead time.
Custom Made
Our custom-made doors are expertly crafted in-house by Todd Doors at our UK production centre. We offer a wide range of designs, all manufactured to millimetre precision with impressively short lead times, giving you a bespoke door solution without the long wait.
Our Custom-Made range of doors typically carry an 8-week lead time.
Bespoke
Bespoke doors are premium, made-to-order designs that offer exceptional flexibility in style, finish, and detailing. Unlike our made-to-measure range, these doors are individually crafted to your exact measurements and are never held as part of our standard stocked collection.
Our Bespoke range of doors typically carry a 14-week lead time.
Whether you need a fire door depends on the layout of your property, the type of building, and where the door is being installed. Fire doors are specifically designed to slow the spread of fire and smoke, helping to protect escape routes and giving occupants valuable time to evacuate safely.
In most modern homes, fire doors are commonly required between integral garages and the main house, in loft conversions, and in properties with three or more storeys. Flats and apartments will also typically require fire doors for entrances and communal areas to meet building regulations. In commercial buildings, fire doors are often mandatory throughout the property as part of the overall fire safety strategy.
A fire door is not just a heavier internal door. It is a complete tested system that includes the door leaf, frame, hinges, seals, glazing (if applicable), and certified ironmongery. When correctly installed, fire doors can provide resistance for a specified period, most commonly FD30 (30 minutes) or FD60 (60 minutes).
Even where regulations may not strictly require them, many homeowners choose fire doors for added peace of mind, particularly in kitchens, garages, or areas leading to escape routes. Modern fire doors are available in a wide range of styles and finishes, meaning you no longer have to compromise on appearance to improve safety.
If you are unsure whether your property requires fire doors, it is always advisable to check current UK building regulations or speak with a qualified installer or building control professional before making a decision.
Fire doors can be crucial in saving lives, but only when they are fitted correctly. We strongly advise using a third party approved installer or carpenter who has experience in fitting fire doors to satisfy the requirements laid out within the appropriate fire certification.
It is also important to routinely inspect your fire door to ensure its operation and free from faults or defects that may inhibit its compliance with fire door standards.
Intumescent strips are required for every fire door we supply, as they play a vital role in the door’s overall performance and certification. Without correctly fitted intumescent seals, the integrity of the fire door can be compromised, meaning it may no longer meet the required fire safety standards.
In the event of a fire, the intumescent material reacts to heat by expanding many times its original size. This seals the gap around the door, helping to prevent the passage of fire, smoke, and hot gases, while protecting escape routes and slowing the spread of the fire.
Todd Doors offers a range of intumescent strip options, including both fire-only and combined fire-and-smoke seals, to suit different applications and certification requirements. We strongly recommend purchasing your intumescent strips at the same time as your fire door to ensure everything is on site and ready for installation, helping to maintain compliance from the outset.
We are happy to provide a certificate for your fire door to support compliance with building regulations. Please contact your Door Expert with your order number, and they will arrange for the certificate to be issued.
Please note; we are unable to advise on the specific contents of this document. For technical guidance, we recommend contacting your local building control office or the issuing authority.
No. We would not recommend you use your internal doors outside. If you choose to use one of our internal doors outside, we will not offer any guarantee on that product. Todd Doors offers a large range of external doors to create a stunning entrance to your home with our range of high quality and beautifully designed external doors.
We recommend applying either a fully painted finish or a high-performance wood finishing treatment to achieve the best results and long-lasting protection. Our doors are suitable for both water-based and solvent-based finishes; however, care should always be taken to avoid oversaturating the surface during the application of the first coat.
For the best outcome, we advise using a reputable, high-quality finishing product and carefully following the manufacturer’s application instructions at all times. This will help ensure a consistent finish, enhance durability, and maintain the appearance of your door over time.
