The Great British Summer

U.K. weather, it’s fair to call it unpredictable at best. The sporadic conditions can dominate our lives; we  worry about the forthcoming weekend’s forecast and pack a bag’s worth of emergency jumpers and coats when we go to the beach in the warm sunshine! But would we have it any other way? The feeling when the sun finally breaks through the clouds on a rainy day is one of the most uplifting things we can experience. We feel elated as we rush to raid the attic for last year’s sun lounger and make mad dashes to the supermarket in search of their last pack of burger baps!

That’s the great thing about this country; we’re a nation of optimists. No matter what happens we make the best of it.

So when the suns out we’re living outside. The garden is King and the lines between internal and external life begin to blur. As we sit out in the garden the sight of the neighbours throwing open their French doors and effectively doubling the size of the kitchen as tables and chairs spill out on the patio has us eyeing up the back window of our own home and wondering, could we have a pair of those doors? Perhaps if hubby postponed golf next weekend and picked up a sledge hammer, why not?

Double doors would allow more light and provide an easy way to let the dog out. Friends would marvel at the continental life we lead, nothing but open spaces, al fresco dining and cocktails until midnight. We’d, of course, have to get a patio heater. We could paint the doors to match the existing windows or even better have them in an oak finish to match the new decking (he’ll have to lay the decking the weekend after).

As your daydream meanders to a land of French doors opening onto rolling hills and olive trees a large splash of rain brings you back to reality! As the heavens open and everyone makes a dash for the back door, pushing and fighting to get inside you can’t help but think how quickly you could all get in through a nice wide double door set!
